As if parents don’t already have enough to worry about, they now have to deal with the fact that their children are as vulnerable to eye strain as adults are. Although this is not good news, the steps to prevent kids from suffering from the symptoms caused by strained eyes are fairly easy to do and can make a huge difference. The causes for eye strain in kids is the same for adults so what parents need to do is commit themselves to making lifestyle changes that will allow their children to still participate in activities such as using the Internet, reading books or watching television. For parents of kids that love to read books for long periods of time, make sure the light source in their reading area is bright enough. This will prevent them from squinting in dim light. If they enjoy reading late at night when having the lights on is not an option, purchase a small lamp or device that attaches to the book, which will direct the light source directly onto the page. When it’s television time, instruct your children to sit at a decent distance from the television. To avoid creating a stark contrast between the brightness of the TV screen and the rest of the room it is important to make sure there is enough light to balance things out. For this reason, it is not advised to allow your kids to sit in the dark and watch television for long periods of time. When it’s time for your children to get on the computer to do homework or play online games, it is vital that you not only set a time for breaks where they should remove themselves from the screen, but also keep an eye on them while in front of the computer screen. If the child starts to rub his/her eyes or ends up leaning into the screen to focus better, this is a sign that the child should take a break for a while. |
